The 7 Facebook Ad Types

In this post I'm going to share the 7 different Facebook Ad types. Most marketers only know about 1 or 2.

If you don't know all 7 you are not missing out, I promise you.

Facebook Fanpage Ad

This is where you advertise a Facebook Fanpage to get more likes, or clicks to your fanpage. These ads are easy to get approved, and can get cheap clicks.

Facebook Fanpage Promoted Page Posts

This is where you can advertise your Facebook Fanpage's posts.

Location: Settings -> Create Ad -> Select a Fanpage -> Select “Promote Page Posts”

Facebook External URL Ad

This is the name I use to describe Facebook Ads that go to external URLs, these ads show to Facebook users in the news feed or right sidebar column. Also referred to as simply “Facebook Ads.”

Location: Settings -> Create Ad -> Enter an external URL

Facebook FBX

Facebook FBX is Facebook Ad's retargeting network. Ever visit a website and then it starts following your around the internet with Ads?

This is Retargeting.

Retargeting is done by using a script to place a cookie on your website's visitors' computer, then showing your advertisement to them on Facebook after they have left your site.

Facebook FBX was only to reserved to big clients at the start, but now anyone can use it.

To use Facebook FBX retargeting features you have to use a Facebook partner site Ad Roll or PerfectAudience.

Location: Ad Roll or PerfectAudience

Facebook Custom Audiences

Facebook Custom Audiences is another method of retargeting users. Facebook Custom Audiences lets you retarget Facebook user by their account's email address, phone number, or Facebook User Id (UIDs).

Basically all you have to do is import your e-mail/phone number/UID list and Facebook Ads will show your custom ads to any e-mails/phone numbers/UIDs matching Facebook accounts.

Location: Settings -> Manage Ad -> Power Editor -> Audience -> Create New Audience -> Custom Audience

Facebook Lookalike Audiences

Facebook Lookalike Audiences is designed for people that are trying to use Facebook Custom Audiences, but don't have a big enough e-mail/phone/UID list.

Facebook Lookalike Audiences target other Facebook users that Facebook Ad's feel are similar to your current list.

Location: Settings -> Manage Ad -> Power Editor -> Audience -> Select an Audience -> In the bottom part select “Create Similar Audience”

Domain Sponsored Stories

Domain Sponsored Stories allows you to turn Facebook user's posts about your site into an ad. Pretend someone shares a link to your website on Facebook, you can pay to turn this post into a sponsored story.

This looks good because friends see their friends talking about your brand/site.

I will go into using these different ad types in more detail in my up coming Facebook posts.

Location: Go here -> Insights for your Website -> Add the code to your site -> Settings -> Manage Ad -> Power Editor -> Create a New Campaign -> Click “I want to advertise something I have on Facebook” -> Select your domain -> Sponsored Stories -> Domain Sponsored Story
